Somatic Nervous System Regulation Enlists the Help of the Body

for Processing Stress, Trauma, and Emotional Triggers Quickly and Effectively.

In today’s hyper-activated world, life can often present us with multiple triggers—whether from social stress, personal challenges, or an overwhelming collective energy—that leave us navigating waves of difficult emotions. While we can't always control life's upsetting events, we can take charge of how our bodies respond to them. Somatic nervous system regulation provides us with the tools to interrupt the body's automatic stress responses, breaking the cycle of fight, flight, or freeze. By working with the body, we can release the emotional charge of these experiences and return to a state of balance, resilience, and calm—even amidst life’s chaos.

Our emotional responses to distressing events manifest physically in a variety of ways like increased heart-rate, shallow breathing, or cold knots in the stomach, among others. Hormones like adrenaline and cortisol flood our systems, leaving us restless, sleepless, and on edge. Over time, this chronic activation can lead to brain fog, irritability, and exhaustion, as our bodies struggle to carry the weight of unresolved stress. Recognizing these signs is the first step to reclaiming balance and restoring calm to both body and mind.

There I was, again...

Burnt out, let down, wondering how on Earth I was going to pick up the pieces - AGAIN.  Rebuild again. Trust again. Try again.  I was sick of being resilient! Tired of being congratulated on how much I could endure, like some kind of draft horse hitched to an endless cycle of exertion and high productivity with minimal rewards.

If you're anything like me, you know what I'm talking about.  Life often feels like it's testing our resilience. Teasing our resolve as we push on daily in the face of obstacles.  For the longest time, I leaned into my resolve and my tenaciousness. "I can do this if I set my mind to it!" was my mantra, and for a long time, this mantra worked. Until it didn't.

A few years ago, during the Covid pandemic, I began to experience panic attacks.  I had just been unjustly fired from a job in which I was out-performing expectations.  And to make things worse, this happened the same week a former employer whose political views didn't jibe with mine decided to lodge a frivolous lawsuit against me for the "crime" of taking down a social-media page I had set up on their behalf.  I knew they were doing it just to retaliate against me for expressing my views on how the pandemic was being handled. I knew they didn't have a case. I KNEW it would go nowhere.  In my head, I "knew".

But my body had reached its limit!  I couldn't sleep or eat. Regular, everyday noises like the phone ringing would trigger a fight-or-flight response that no amount of talking or reassurance from my friends and family could quell.  My heart pounded, my head felt like a murky puddle and I was sure this was going to be the end for me. I would break out into cold sweats and hyperventilate while I wandered from room to room trying my best to think things through.

Finally, the realization emerged that I had resources I wasn't using. For years, I had been working with the body in various capacities like dance and ritual movement.  I knew through the movement arts that bodies must be primed for expression and flow; one doesn't just switch those on.  So, I went through my repertoire and selected exercises that help bodies shift.

One of the go-to exercise I chose was full body-shaking. Every time I would feel the panic creeping in, I would ritually shake my body, joint by joint.  I listened to my body, and it asked for full-body tapping.  It asked for grounding and lured me to the outdoors to lay on the Earth while exhaling deeply. It asked me to squeeze my extremities. It invited me to lay in certain positions and press my eyes.  I followed its advice, setting aside time each day to perform these exercises while listening to low-frequency grounding music.  As I  stabilized,  I began to play music that helped me rget in touch with my rage, allowing my body to release and my voice to utter whatever wanted to come out.

The funk began to subside after a few weeks of regular, daily practice.  Slowly, I returned to myself.

In 2024, I embarked on a focused study of nervous system regulation after a traumatic incident left me dysregulated again.  I saw so many similarities between what I had done in 2020 to help myself off the ledge.  And there is science to back it up!  So, I certified as a Neurofit nervous-system regulation coach and have made a commitment to helping people discover the precious resources that their bodies hold for overcoming trauma, panic, and anxiety.

My head now knows what my body has always known: it is the key to emotional, mental and spiritual resilience!  Our traumas do not define our paths through life. We have resources we can choose to use any time, and I look forward to sharing more of them with you along my new path of lasting change.
